Aquamarine is an icy blue variety of beryl, much like emerald and morganite. In Latin, the name aquamarine is translated as 'water of the sea' and it is easy to see why from the sparkle and clarity of this oceanic blue gem. It has been said that in ancient times, sailors believed they would be kept safe on voyages at sea if an aquamarine was on board. As a birthstone aquamarine represents March birthdays and is also symbolic of Pisces star signs.
